I believe that we tend to play the same way we talk.
Some people talk…….real…………..slow……………..and……….deliberate. And it shows in their playing (think B.B. King)
Some people talkrealfastandtheycanhardlygetthewordsoutfastenoughohmygawd!! (Think of all the 80′s shredders)
Some people talk…..inspurts…..and…..havea……..real……staccatostyle…..(Think of Santana)
And we tend to play the same way. Which is COOL! I LOVE IT!!
As for myself? You may notice that I tend to talk fast and play fast. I TRY to be conscience of this and slow down a little…sometimes with good results…sometimes not!
So you may hear me play a riff and my natural instinct is to play it fast and legato….so I do.
HOWEVER, you should play it the way YOU feel it and not the way I play it.
Notes are notes, but I am talking about the execution of those notes.
Here’s the deal, and you have heard me say this over and over and over again – enough to make you wanna puke!
MUSIC IS EXPRESSION!
I say that over and over again because I really want you to get the point that (WARNING: here comes some philosophical mumbo jumbo!) in music there is no wrong or right…..
THERE JUST IS
What do I mean by that? Well, everyone has their own interpretation as to what sounds good – and that is GREAT! I couldn’t live in a vanilla world. Some people love Country. Some love Rock and Roll. Some love Classical. Some even love the shrill of Yoko Ono (that one I am still trying to figure out!).
We all bring something to the party.
Now here is why I am saying this again: BE TRUE TO YOURSELF!
Whether you talk like a stereotypical fast talking New Yorker, a stereotypical laid back Californian, or the stereotypical slow and deliberate talk of a Southerner…it don’t matter:
